On February 7th, members of the Guam’s Engineering, Architecture and Land Surveyor (EALS) professions gathered at the Governor’s Complex in Adelup for a proclamation signing to declare the week of February 16th to the 22nd as EALS Week.

Spearheaded by Society of American Military Engineers (SAME) Guam Post, EALS week is a celebration of Engineers, Architects and Land Surveyors that recognizes their significant contributions to our island community. The event was kicked off by Jenny Bowers of SAME who highlighted some of the ways that EALS professionals work to create a community that is safe, responds to the needs of its users, enhances our lifestyles and is kind to the environment. Her words were shared by several others in attendance who represented the many professional organizations on island such as the Guam Society of Professional Engineers and the American Institute of Architects, Marianas Chapter.

These sentiments were underscored by the Governor and Lieutenant Governor who emphasized the critical roles that EALS professionals play in the way that Guam responds to its current needs and looks towards the development and expansion. We thank the LGT Administration and staff for hosting the event, as well as members of the Legislature and PEALS Board for being in attendance to acknowledge our EALS community. Biba EALS Week!

The EALS Week festivities continued on through SAME Guam Post’s Annual Joint Membership Meeting at Hyatt Resort Guam on February 19th. AIA Marianas’ Vice President, Mateo Matanane is shown along with members of Guam’s professional Engineers and Land Surveying community as well as with members of Guam’s Legislature for the Presentation of Resolution No. 14-38 COR in recognition of EALS Week and the many ways that Engineers, Architects and Land Surveyors contribute to our island.

A PROCLAMATION OF THE GOVERNOR PROCLAIMING FEBRUARY 16 TO FEBRUARY 22, 2025,
IN RECOGNITION OF GUAM ENGINEERS, ARCHITECTS, & LAND SURVEYORS WEEK

WHEREAS,

our island has undergone significant development since our ancestors built latte-supported huts and crafted the world’s fastest proas. Historical records highlight the remarkable structures created by Guam’s early inhabitants and showcase the ingenuity of the CHamoru people;

WHEREAS,

today, we see the ingenuity and creativity in the work of Guam’s Engineers, Architects, and Land Surveyors who, at the forefront of innovation, are instrumental in designing and creating the solutions that Design Our Future. Through their creativity, expertise, and dedication, today’s engineers, architects, and land surveyors are addressing global challenges, driving technological advancements, and making a positive impact on society’s future while preserving and promoting our island culture;

WHEREAS,

Engineers, Architects, and Land Surveyors Week helps bring awareness to the works and contributions of our island’s Engineers, Architects, and Land Surveyors, igniting in organizations and volunteers a sense of civic duty to make a difference and promoting the value of quality design and maintaining ethical work practices within the professional community to safeguard life, health, and property;

WHEREAS,

Engineers, Architects, and Land Surveyors lead with sustainable design and engineering that integrates carbon neutrality, improves air quality, reduces construction waste, and does not deplete our natural resources. They plan resilient communities that effectively recover from disasters and adapt to evolving conditions. Engineers, Architects, and Land Surveyors support the Governor’s Guam Green Growth (G3) initiatives and the Guahan 2050 Sustainable Development Plan toward a sustainable and resilient future;

WHEREAS,

Engineers, Architects, and Land Surveyors support the Governor’s vision of advancing our students in Science, Technology, Engineering, Architecture/Art, and Mathematics, an updated movement known as STEAM. Integrating the arts and humanities fosters creativity, critical thinking, and curiosity, and we aim to equip future problem-solvers with the skills and imagination to innovate and excel; and

WHEREAS,

this year’s Engineers, Architects, and Land Surveyors Week theme, “Design Your Future,” celebrates today’s achievements and aims to pave the way for a brighter, more sustainable, resilient, and more diverse future.
