WORLD ARCHITECTURE DAY

“BUILD YOUR DREAM GREEN COMMUNITY”

DRAWING CONTEST & ART EXHIBIT

This year, the Public Outreach committee, led by Cherika Garcia and Dominic Lizama, organized AIA Marianas’ first Design Contest & Art Exhibit in celebration of World Architecture Day 2024. The contest focused on sustainability and environmentally friendly design, inviting Guam’s youth to design their dream green community. We received an overwhelming response from our friends at GDOE, DoDEA, Private, Charter and Home School networks, amounting to over 70 submissions from Kindergarten to High School. Each grade level sought to provide a design solution to their respective project brief- from a recycled playground to a park for fun and friends to a green community center for all.

Many dazzled with their artistic skills, some impressed with their technical knowledge and each one provided innovative solutions that underlined the importance of communicating with Guam’s youth as we look for ways to build a more sustainable future for the island. The event was kicked off by a ceremony at the Agana Shopping Center where students, parents and teachers gathered to view all of the work on display and award our top finalists. Our President, Renato Martinez, welcomed the crowd, offering some insight on our local architecture community and thanking everyone for their efforts.

From over 70 entries, 9 winners were chosen in the Elementary, Middle and High School categories. AIA Marianas thanks every participant for their hard work as well as all the teachers and school staff that helped circulate the competition details. We also give special thanks to the Agana Shopping Center for graciously hosting the event as well as Bestseller for their generous donation. Lastly, we thank local firms DPI and TRMA for their board submissions, showcasing their sustainable projects. We hope we can continue to inspire and tap into the ingenuity that only our youth posses.
